How much tartan fabric you need will depend on the design you are planning to make. A proper traditional kilt needs about 5 – 8 yards of fabric, depending on your size and how deep you want the pleating. Small items such as sashes, scarves, ties, the fly plaid or home accessories made from Scottish plaid fabric usually need 1–2 yards.
